Alternate Communcation

Technology has greatly changed the ways we communicate. First phones, then text messages and email have moved people away from face-to-face communication to impersonal text-based communication. Most of the time, this is fine. The problem is that people are forgetting how to communicate in person, and often forgetting that they should. Although I love asynchronous text-based communication, it is vital that we remember that face-to-face communication has its place still in our communities.

  1. I agree. Communication through technology certainly has value but is dangerous to use it as a main form of communication.

  2. It is funny how true this is. My first mission companion forced me to do telephone role-plays because I was so bad at talking to people on the phone.

  3. It's true. I am always nervous with asking a girl go out for a date in person. I tend to do that by text. This can't impress a girl. Can you help me get used to talk with girl in person?

  4. hmmm I like asynchronous ... what about face-to-face asynchronous? Leaving a video message?
It seems to crop up in scifi a fair amount.

  5. I think part of the underlying problem here is that face-to-face communication requires thought and effort, whereas communication via other media tends to be extremely casual and impulsive. It doesn't take long before new users stop proofreading text messages or considering what they say in online posts.
